A recent column critical of privatization, authored by Bill Maher and carried on multiple Web-based news outlets, made inaccurate statements about Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). In his column, Mr. Maher claimed that CCA lobbies Congress “for stiffer sentencing laws,” allegedly for profit motives. CCA has not and does not lobby for or against sentencing laws. Those are public policy decisions that our society and its elected officials determine. The financial success and viability of our company, a company of more than 17,000 corrections professionals nationwide, is not based upon stricter sentencing laws. Rather, it is based on our ability to provide safe, secure facilities with effective programs and services that meet or exceed the expectations of our governmental partners. Public-private partnership in corrections, an industry CCA founded more than 25 years ago, provides meaningful services to government in a cost-effective manner. Additionally, our services provide relief to public correctional systems, resulting in greater efficiencies and safer conditions for staff and inmates in existing public correctional facilities. Our employees take great pride in the important public safety services they provide to their respective communities, states, and our nation. We are likewise proud of the meaningful role CCA and our industry has in helping government meet its correctional responsibilities while being good stewards of the taxpayers’ dollars.
