A Correctional Career with CCA: A Stable Economic Stimulus Package
Posted Oct 2, 2008
The national economic landscape these days is intimidating, if not altogether frightening.
The headlines are highlighting job losses. News teleprompters are rolling a nightly script that raises fears reminiscent of the Great Depression. Online message boards are abuzz with advice-seekers and families trying to figure out how to keep food on the table. And talk of big business bailouts and walk-aways from the housing crisis has working people eyeing their retirement account balances and credit interest rates with trepidation.
These are the developments that can keep us awake at night. This is the news that makes people delay opening their mailboxes.
But this is also the information that keeps us confident in what we've been saying for so long – that corrections is among the few industries that offers recession-resistant employment. The need for correctional services shows no signs of slowing for years to come, but you don't just have to take our word for it.
In fact, according to The Pew Center on the States' "One in 100" Behind Bars in America" 2008 report, more than one in every 100 adults in the nation is incarcerated – a record high. And the Bureau of Justice Statistics notes that the number of adults in the corrections system has steadily risen.
These trends signal the stability of our industry. Competent and committed professionals at every experience level are needed to maintain the safety and security of correctional settings and provide the care and treatment that will help offenders reintegrate into society upon release.
With CCA, these correctional professionals may serve in safety and security, education, inmate programs, management, administration, health services, maintenance and other specialties. We employ more than 17,000 in nearly 70 facilities across the country.
So, for those who have been laid off or downsized, may be beginning a career, or continuing an established one in a new setting, corrections may offer one less thing to worry about – and one more reason to sleep at night.
